Tesla will now send push notifications when 12V battery needs to be replaced

Tesla is seemingly now issuing push notifications when the vehicle’s 12V battery needs to be replaced.

Twitter user BLKMDL3 shared a screenshot of a notification he received from Tesla that informed him his 12V battery must be replaced soon. It also encourages him to schedule a service appointment to replace the battery.

“Really smart, hope they add push notifications when you have low tire pressure or other important alerts,” BLKMDL3 says in the tweet.

Since Tesla has access to virtually every piece of information on the vehicle, it certainly seems like a welcomed feature to notify owners if anything needs to be repaired or replaced, like windshield wipers, wiper fluid, or a headlamp.

The 12V battery in Teslas powers smaller motors and functions around the vehicle, including lights, power window motors, wiper motors, power lift gate, washer fluid pumps, ABS electronics, the main display and more.

Last year, Tesla switched away from using a 12V lead-acid battery to a lithium-ion battery. Lead-acid batteries perform well in gasoline-powered vehicles because they produce the high output needed to start the engine. However, that high output is not needed in an electric vehicle.

Lithium-ion batteries last longer, weigh less and are much better optimized for electric vehicles, as they will last the lifetime of the vehicle and never need to be changed.

Whether you have a lead-acid or lithium-ion low-voltage battery, they're both charged through the vehicle's main battery pack instead of an alternator like a traditional vehicle.

With Tesla at the forefront of battery technology, specifically for vehicles, a study conducted by Dr. Jeff Dahn and his team at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, says that the Austin-based automotive company may be able to produce batteries that last 100 years. Dahn and his team has been working exclusively with Tesla since 2015 to develop new Li-ion batteries.

Earlier this year, Tesla started delivering Model Ys from their Austin, Texas Gigafactory with their new 4680 battery pack. These battery packs have already seen impressive charging rates and are showing very promising potential.

Recently, rumors swirled about Netflix cracking down on users sharing their passwords with friends and family. But last week, the video streaming giant announced a new policy that will require devices to connect to the account owner’s network at least once every 30 days. If not, that device will be locked out from the account.

This concerned Tesla owners who regularly watch Netflix in their vehicles. Many owners, especially those in apartment buildings aren't able to easily connect their Tesla to their WiFi network.

Thankfully, Netflix’s new password sharing policy won’t apply to Netflix's service in a Tesla. An official Netflix representative reached out to DriveTeslaCanada to clarify the new policy.

Prior to Netflix’s clarification, Netflix customer service representatives were telling Tesla owners to purchase an additional account for their Tesla so they do not lose access. But is it enough to pause or stop the customers leaving en masse?

The Los Gatos, California-headquartered company started zapping password sharing in Latin America last year and has now been implemented in New Zealand, Canada, Portugal, and Spain.

There is currently no set date when Netflix will begin this push in the United States but according to Tubefilter, it’s anticipated to begin before the end of Q1.

Netflix’s original announcement of this policy change was not received lightly by users. Many canceled their accounts over the strict policy change that is aimed at preventing users from sharing passwords with friends and family.

Tesla's Supercharging network has been exclusive to Tesla owners partly due to the proprietary plug that's used in the U.S. and Canada. However, the company may have to make changes to access billions of dollars the U.S. government will spend to build more charging stations across the country.

Tesla's Supercharging network in the United States will have to become available to competitors due to a new requirement from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Reuters reports that the final provision will be announced next week, which will pressure Tesla to expand beyond its proprietary charging plug and include the CCS1 charging standard used by many of its competitors. Otherwise, Tesla will lose the chance to receive $7.5 billion in subsidies, which is part of President Joe Biden's plan to construct 500,000 electric vehicle chargers in the coming years.

Tesla's U.S. Supercharger network, with more than 40,000 chargers worldwide, is often regarded as the benchmark because of its reliability, speed, and availability. However, the network's exclusivity has led to non-Tesla owners being unable to use it. For example, Tesla drivers can buy an adapter to connect to CCS1 chargers, but non-Tesla owners cannot do the same with Superchargers.

Chargers seeking to become part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program will need to use the CCS standard, the U.S. charging system standard used in nearly all charging stations except Tesla's Superchargers. Companies such as ChargePoint Holdings and EVgo Inc are expected to compete for funding under the NEVI program.

Unfortunately, this move ends the idea that Tesla's charging system, which offers the most reliable hardware, will be the choice for North America charging stations. Tesla opened up its connector design for any competitor to use, but it appears EVs will be stuck with the bulky CCS system.

Tesla has already opened up some of its Superchargers in Europe and Australia to non-Tesla EVs, however, Teslas and Superchargers in those regions already use the CCS charging standard (CCS2 is used in Europe and Australia), making it easier.

Tesla has previously stated that it plans to allow other EVs to access their Superchargers in the U.S. as well, but that is still in progress. Tesla is expected to reveal updated Superchargers that will offer the CCS1 plug alongside Tesla's NACS plug.

Elon Musk met with the Biden administration a few weeks ago to discuss several topics, including the charging network. Last year, Tesla wrote the Federal Highway Administration, offering the Biden administration suggestions on how to shape the charging program. The company has also responded to a recent request from Ohio officials that companies submit charging proposals. In addition, in Arizona, Tesla said it was open to upgrading its chargers or building new ones to meet federal requirements, although a final decision was not made.
